The Front Cover

 The front cover of the crankcase carries the front crankshaft bearing, the gas starter distributor with its gear train and provides a mounting for the breathers.

 Both sides of this piece also spigot to the adapter plate. Concentricity is of course of paramount importance in all the parts which form the main axis of the engine. 

 Here the small rotary table is combined with the Bridgeport sine table. The precision and repeatability which is possible when working with this large sine table is always a pleasure.

Here I found one of the few mistakes in the old manual. The right angle drive for the gas starter distributor could not be a worm and wheel, as shown in the diagram above, as the ratio would be wrong; it should in fact be a pair of crossed helical gears. I must write to the Air Ministry.
